A local SEO checklist for small businesses

Local SEO is not about tricks. For most small businesses, ranking well in "near me" searches comes down to a short list of basics done properly and kept up to date. This checklist covers the things that matter most, roughly in the order to tackle them.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
- Verify your business on Google Business Profile if you have not already.
- Use your exact, consistent business name, address and phone number.
- Pick the most accurate primary category, plus relevant secondary categories.
- Add real photos of your location, team and work, not stock images.
- Set correct hours, including holiday hours when they change.
2. Be consistent everywhere your business is listed
Your business name, address and phone number should match, word for word, across your website, Google, Justdial, Facebook and any other directory you appear on. Inconsistent details, like "Rd" in one place and "Road" in another, can quietly hurt how confidently Google shows your listing.
3. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and whether people actually click through. Rather than asking for a burst of reviews once, build a habit: ask happy customers at the natural moment, such as right after a good visit or delivery, and reply to every review, good or bad, in a professional tone.

4. Make your website say where you are
- Mention your city or neighbourhood naturally in page titles and headings.
- Add a dedicated page per location if you serve more than one area.
- Embed a Google Map and list your full address in the footer.
- Make sure your site works well and loads quickly on mobile, since most local searches happen on a phone.
5. Keep technical basics healthy
A slow site, broken links or pages that are not indexed by Google will quietly undercut everything else on this list. A basic technical check, using Google Search Console, every month or two catches most issues before they cost you visibility.
None of this produces overnight results. Local SEO is closer to maintaining a shopfront than running a one-time campaign: the businesses that stay visible are usually the ones that keep these basics current, not the ones that did something clever once.
Put it into practice.
The problem
Customers nearby search for what you offer, but your business does not appear in Google Maps.
Step 1
Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, with correct hours, photos and services
Step 2
Use the same name, address and phone number on your site and every listing
Step 3
Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to each one politely
The plan
The plan: show up in local search and Maps, with a profile that makes calling you a single tap.
