Keyword research for small businesses, without paid tools

SEO · 2 min read · Updated 29 Sept 2026

Keyword research sounds technical, but the idea is simple: find out how your customers describe what they need, and use those words on your pages.

What a searcher sees: a Maps listing, a rating and a page that answers the question quickly.

Start with real customer language

  • List the questions customers ask you on calls and WhatsApp.
  • Read your own reviews and your competitors' reviews for the words people use.
  • Note the problem people describe, not only the service name you use internally.

Use Google itself

Type a few of those phrases into Google and look at the suggestions that appear as you type, the "People also ask" box and the related searches at the bottom of the page. These show real searches without any paid tool.

Match each keyword to one page

Give each important phrase its own page instead of squeezing everything onto the home page. A page about "dental implants in Gurugram" will usually serve a searcher better than a general dentistry page that mentions implants in passing.

Check what the results actually look like

If the top results are all price comparison sites or big directories, a small business page may struggle to compete for that phrase. A more specific phrase, often including your area, is usually a better first target.

Track the pages in Google Search Console after a few weeks. It shows which searches already bring visitors, and that is often the best guide to what to write next.

A short example

Put it into practice.

  1. The problem

You write pages about your services, but not in the words your customers actually type.

  2. Step 1

List the questions customers ask you on calls and on WhatsApp

  3. Step 2

Check how those searches appear in Google suggestions and related searches

  4. Step 3

Give each page one main topic, and use the customer’s own words in the heading

  5. The plan

The plan: build pages around real customer questions, one topic per page.
