How to choose a web design agency in India (and what to ask)

Websites · 3 min read · Updated 29 Sept 2026

Most agency websites look convincing. Portfolios are curated, and testimonials are easy to collect from a few friendly clients. So the way to judge an agency is less about how its own site looks and more about how it answers plain questions before you pay.

Ask who will actually do the work

Some agencies sell you with a senior person and then hand the work to whoever is free. Ask for the names and roles of the people on your project, and whether you can speak to them directly. A small team that can answer this clearly is usually a good sign.

Get the price and the exclusions in writing

A fixed quote should list the pages, the features, the timeline and what is not included. Domain, hosting, premium plugins, stock photos and ad budgets are commonly separate. None of that is wrong, but it should be written down before you agree.

Check who owns what

  • The domain should be registered in your name, with you as the account owner.
  • Hosting, Google Analytics, Search Console and any ad accounts should be under your login.
  • You should receive the design files and the code, or a clear statement of what you get.

A report that only shows impressions and followers cannot tell you whether the money is working.

Ask how results will be reported

For SEO and ads, ask what a report looks like and which numbers it contains. Good reports connect work to enquiries: calls, forms, WhatsApp messages. A report that only shows impressions and followers cannot tell you whether the money is working.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google, and honest agencies say so.
  • A price far below every other quote with no explanation.
  • The agency holds your domain or ad account.
  • Pressure to sign quickly, or a long contract before you have seen any work.

Ask for a small first step

A paid audit, a written plan or a single landing page lets you see how an agency communicates and delivers before you commit to a bigger project. If they resist a small first step, that tells you something too.

A short example

Put it into practice.

  1. The problem

Every agency website promises the same thing, so it is hard to see who will actually deliver.

  2. Step 1

Ask to see the process and a written scope before you see a price

  3. Step 2

Speak to the person who will do the work, not only the person who sells it

  4. Step 3

Check who owns the domain, hosting, code and design files at the end

  5. The plan

The plan: hire the team that explains its scope clearly and hands you everything you paid for.
